I recently read an article on churchleaders.com by Rev. Frank Powell entitled, 7 Signs You Are a Counterfeit Christian. It got me to thinking about what it really means to follow Christ and whether or not the Church today actually follows Christ's teachings or not. Then I stumbled across a video on Facebook from a man who lost his wife in the Paris attacks. I posted the following as I shared the video to my Facebook feed:
This man understands. This man gets it, he has arrived. The terrorists have no power over him because he doesn't allow them to have that power. This is what it means to follow Christ. I don't know if this man is a Christian or not but to file Christ means not responding with hate or violence, it means not seeking safety but instead living your life with abundance, it means showing love, hospitality, and forgiveness to others (note i didn't say to your friends but to ALL people), it means knowing that your security - your safety is not found in this world because it is not from this world--it is found in Christ Jesus.
It's simple really, one wanting to follow Christ just needs to read Matthew 5, The Sermon on the Mount, it can not be any clearer than this:
38 ‘You have heard that it was said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” 39 But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; 40 and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; 41 and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. 42 Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you. 43 ‘You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.” 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers and sisters,[o] what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
