The Old Catholic Church is anti-abortion but believes that such a personal and immense decision should be left up to the individuals. Because of this we are not in favor of the Ammendment 1 being proposed to the TN State Constitution in November. The ammendment is worded as such:

Nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding of an abortion. The people retain the right through their elected state representatives and state senators to enact, amend, or repeal statutes regarding abortion, including, but not limited to, circumstances of pregnancy resulting from rape or incest or when necessary to save the life of the mother.

I believe this is an attempt by our government to control private decisions about healthcare. I discourage abortion as a church leader because of the harm I believe it causes. However, I don't believe that my beliefs or my church's beliefs should be forced upon every other person. One of the cornerstones of the Old Catholic faith is the conscience of the person is sovereign.

Our country was founded on a separation of Church and State. The Founding Fathers never intended for the government to make decisions based on any particular religion but to make decisions that benefit the people as a whole. When we elect our Senators and Representatives we elect them to do just that -- represent us -- not to force their person religious beliefs upon us. Our government is by the people, for the people and of the people. I think our government has forgotten that and it's time the people remind them of this.

Abortion laws don't stop abortions they stop safe abortions. If a woman makes that decision I would rather her be able to go to a medical clinic to have it done than to a back alley doctor with unsterile equipment.

I have serious issues with the current pro-life groups because they are not really pro-life they are pro-birth. If you think they are pro-life then try offering them an application to sign up to be a foster parent and see how quickly they have excuses why they can't, ask them when the last time they protested against capital punishment (never), ask them why they refuse to support programs that help feed and clothe and house the thousands of poor families with children, when have they spoken out against our multi-billion dollar war/military machine.

If you are pro-life then you support life in all forms from birth to death.
